Abuja – Organized labour and members of civil society groups
have urged Nigerians to gear up for a nationwide protest,
set to take place from
Wednesday, in protest of the fuel price hike announced by Government last week.
According to Sun News Online, Labour organizations have
called on citizens to stockpile enough food for the duration
of the strike due to all banks, sea and airports, government
and private offices and markets set for nationwide shutdown in the coming week.
The joint body of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have demanded that
Government revert back to the old pump price of N86.50,
while considering that the price hike signals a betrayal of
In addition to demanding a
reinstatement of the old pump price, Labour has also
demanded that Government revert back to the pre-45% increase in electricity,
while urging that meters be made available to citizens and an end be put to estimated billing.
Organized labour has
reiterated that it will not hesitate to take to the streets and mobilize ordinary and helpless Nigerians in the fight
against inflated prices.
