I do not know how many of you received this message from a purportedly good Samaritan that meat sellers now use formalin to repel flies from meat. The message advised consumers to patronise butchers with flies around their meat as that is a clear sign of formalin-free meat.

According to the message on the social media, “People are using formalin, the chemical used to preserve dead bodies in preserving meat as it keeps flies away. When I asked a pharmacist, Capt. Kenneth, remember of UPDF, he said it is possible.”

Continuing, “This is a national public health issue. After my friend’s wife lost a baby through miscarriage and investigations showed the presence of formalin in her blood. When consumed, formalin goes to the liver and destroys it.”

Appealing to consumers, the author in the message stated, “Please, people of God, this is serious. When you go to buy meat, go to a butcher that has flies around. Use this as the only way to confirm that there is no formalin present. If the meat is without flies, what is keeping them away is formalin. Be informed. Share this information please and save life.”

Healthy eating of a family cannot be overemphasized. To arrange proper nutrition and healthy food time table – means to protect all family members from a variety diseases, improve the quality of life.

1. The First Principle Of A Normal Food Time Table For A Family-: A mandatory hearty full breakfast. It should be 25-30% of the daily diet. The breakfast menu should include products having in their composition complex fiber-rich carbohydrates – this will provide the body with energy for a long
time, to extend the sense of fullness. Complex carbohydrates are “black” porridges – oatmeal and buckwheat, cereal.
In addition to complex carbohydrates for breakfast, a family should eat protein-rich foods, such as eggs, cheese or cottage cheese.

2. The Second Principle Of Healthy Family Food Time Table -: to ensure the possibility of a second breakfast. School-age children can
receive a full hot lunch at school. Adult family members between breakfast and lunch also should have a useful snack. If there is no possibility to have a snack, you can drink a cup of yogurt and a cup of unsweetened green tea, soursop tea or zobo drink – or just take with you to work the apple and eat it about 11 o’clock in the

5. The Fifth Principle-: the food should be prepared from natural products. Avoid surrogates.
Choose the right recipes with proper nutrition, where it is recommended not to boil or fry foods, but to steam and bake. A frying makes the products excessively greasy.

In today’s article i will be discussing on “5 Hidden Facts About Sugar Processed Food” under “Healthy Eating”.

The excessive amount of hidden sugar in processed food has quite become alarming in the Sub-Sahara region, including Nigeria.

It is difficult to know the exact amount of natural sugar versus added sugar by just looking at their label, most foods that are typically considered “healthy” can contain shocking amounts of added sugar or fructose, in form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) according to Dr. Robert Lustig, a professor of clinical pediatries in the Division of Endocrinology at UC San Francisco, its important to distinguish between Natural Food-Base Sugar Versus Added Sugar.

He notes that a small serving cup of plain yogurt has about seven grams of sugar in the form of Lactose a natural sugar found in dairy which does not cause any major harm.

While, a Fruit Flavored yogurt on the other hand contains about 19 grams of sugars 12 grams of which is added sugar, this is equivalent to eating a small cup of plain yogurt with a bowl of frosted corn flakes.

Soft drinks contain caffeine, a mild diuretic that makes you urinate more, thereby eliminating water from your body. It also contains about 55mg of salt, and when you take in salt and excrete water you get thirstier.

The reason why soda contains so much sugar is because they have to mask the taste of the salt. Sugar has also been found to be 8 times as addictive as cocaine which also ensures that you will stay hooked on processed foods and sweet drinks.

The facts that your liver has very limited capacity to metabolize processed fructose does not mean you should not be watchful. Excess sugar is metabolize into body fat and leads to all the chronic metabolic diseases, e.g Cardiovascular Disease, High Blood Pressure, Cancer, etc.

According to a study published in JAMA3, Americans get on average about 350 calories a day from added sugar in die diet. (This is equivalent to 22 teaspoons of sugar, which amounts to 25% of the average American’s daily calorie intake). In reference to the case study people who consumed 21% or more of their daily calories in the form of sugar were twice as likely to die from heart disease compared to those who got 7% or less calories from added sugar.

The risk was nearly tripped among those who consumed 25% or more of their daily calories from added sugar. Approximately 30% of Africans consumed added sugar at a very high rate level. It is strongly recommended limiting your daily fructose intake to 25 grams or less from all sources, including natural ones like fruits that equate to just over 60 spoons of sugar a day.

Cancer cells needs glucose to thrive, and Carbohydrates turn into glucose in your body. In order to starve the cancer cells you have to eliminate its primary food source (The sugars) which includes all none-vegetable carbohydrate.

Otto Warburg actually received a noble prize back in 1934 for his research on Cancer Cell Physiology, which clearly demonstrated Cancer Cells require more sugar to thrive. The latest World Cancer report issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), predict world wild cancer rate to rise in the next 2 decades. But the reports also note that half of all cancers are preventable and can be avoided if current Medical knowledge is acted upon diet and exercise inclusive.

According to a study published in the journal of clinical investigation, sugar also appears to initiate cancer growth. As reported by, this study provides evidence that increased glycolytic activation itself can be an oncogenic event.

This implies that the activation of sugar-based metabolism in a cell driven by both the presence of increased quantities of glucose on the cell membrane surface drives cancer initiation.

With our hectic schedules, bad eating habits, and fast-paced lifestyles, maintaining healthy habits have gone for a toss.
We have comfortably taken to eating out more often, binging on processed foods, and have completely forgotten to exercise.

However, all of these choices contribute towards lifestyle diseases like diabetes and hypertension that have started to set in early in our lives. Obviously, we need to break away from such habits, and do some necessary introspection if we want to ensure longer and healthier lives:

Start your mornings fresh with a warm cup of green tea. It is devoid of caffeine, and will reduce stress, as well as blood pressure. However, it will give you the necessary energy boost to start your day. Green tea also acts as a detox that helps flush out toxins from your body and keeps you disease-free.

Green tea also contains polyphenols that help fight free radicals and burn extra fat. Ideally, you need to consume green tea without any sweeteners. However, you may choose to add some honey into your cup for some added flavor.

The secret to longevity is getting adequate exercise. Working up a sweat keeps your heart and other organs functioning at optimum levels. Also, the release of sweat helps rid your body of excess salts and other toxins.

Exercise also ensures muscle building and facilitates the replacement of stored fats with lean muscle tissues. If you think exercise is too difficult for you, try other forms like aerobics or yoga. Foodie Naija Update (Flour Mills trains food vendors)

Pupils in 100 public primary schools in Lagos State will
resume for the 2015/2016 academic session next week to improvements in
the snacks and meals food vendors sell in
their schools.

The changes are courtesy of Flour Mills Nigeria Ltd, which has trained food vendors in schools. They are expected to apply same in
providing mid-day meals for the pupils.
Some of them were also given industrial gas cookers to help in
their cooking.

The firm also donated tuck shops to schools where its array of
snacks that have been fortified with
essential nutrients would be sold to
encourage pupils to eat healthy rather than consuming snacks that are
not nutricious.
The snacks include Golden bites (a sachet of chin chin), noodies
(ready-to-eat noodles snack), Kool to Go (a vitamin c drink),
and noodles.
During the training at the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board
(LSUBEB), Maryland, the Executive
Secretary of the board, Mrs Abosede
Adelaja, praised the company for
remembering this category of workers
in the school system, urging the vendors not to take their roles in the smooth running of the
school likely.

“Today is a good day. I have heard of training for teachers,
clerical officers and cleaners, but we
have never heard anything like
training for food vendors. Food vendors, you play a very great role in our
schools; you may not know. If for instance you feed any child
with poison, there would be disarray.
It may take up to one week for the
school to settle down.
“Your role is essential. You play a
parental role to these children.

You must change the way you package your goods. When you cook, ask yourself if you can give what you are cooking to your own child. Let us do everything properly and with the fear of God,” she said.
On the new quality assurance programme of the state government, the Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs Ronke Soyombo, who was represented
by Mrs Funmilayo Odupitan, said in the
new session, food vendors would be assessed as part of the quality assurance process in schools.

“From September, we will start by examining your appearance; we will
assess you from head-to-toe – whether your head is covered; we want to
check your health record; how neat the environment is and the quality of the food you are serving,”she said.
Representative of Flour Mills, Mr
Efosa Cliff-Ogingo, said the initiative was part of the firm’s
efforts to promote children’s right to nutrition.

“The major focus of Flour Mills is to ensure that the right of a child to adequate nutrition is guaranteed. To reduce health
hazards to our
children, it is good to discourage unhealthy snacks and replace
them with healthy and well fortified
snacks,” he said.

Milk Shake is easy to make only if you follow the steps and tips orderly, and it plays tricks as well so its left for you to follow the steps appropriately.

Milk shake is one of the
easiest frozen treats that you make. It can be a dessert or a beverage and can
be made in an infinite number
of flavour combination.

2 cups ice cream
2tin milk or powder milk
1/2 table spoon full vanilla flavour


1. Add all the recipes in the blender, Cover and blend till it becomes smooth and
thick. Be mindful of the quantity of the vanilla, ensure it corresponds with the quantity of the milk shake you are to use. Excessive mixing
will cause it to turn thin and

In today’s post i will be show you all how to make/prepare Chin-Chin
just relax and take time to go through the recipe and procedures carefully.

i. 500gms of Flour
ii. 125gms of Butter
iii. 1/4 cup of Sugar
iv. 1/2 cup of Milk
v. 1 teaspoon of Nutmeg
vi. 1 teaspoon of Baking powder
vii. 1/3 teaspoon of Baking soda
viii. 1/2 teaspoon of Salt
ix. Vegetable oil for frying
x. Water to mix
xi. 1/4 cup of Milk flavour
xii. Flavour of your choice
xiii. Egg (optional)

1. Wash your hand properly with moisturisng soap and use clean water to rice out, clean the rolling board and the utensils to be used in making the Chin-chin.
2. Get a sieve place in a clean big bowl and measure 500gms of flour, sieve it, add 1/4 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of milk, 1/4 cup of milk flavour, 1 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 teaspoon baking powder.
3. Add 1/3 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, mix all the recipes together, open the butter, press it out into the bowl.
4. Use your finger tips to pick it, then use your palms to apply the rubbing method, add 1 or 1/2 cups of water alongside 1/2 cap of flavour to the flour.
5. Knead the dough very well, after kneading the dough, place it on a dusted board, cut into a ball size, cover for 8minutes so as to rise.
6. After 8minutes uncover it and place on a dusted board, then roll it, use your pizza cutter or knife to give it any shape you want.
7. Set a heat, place a fry pan/ sauce pan on the heat, add must vegetable oil, when its hot, remove one dough put in the hot oil when it pops, you can now start frying the dough.
8. Ensure it does not get burnt, when its well fried serve with chill juice or soft drinks.

Today’s post is one of the easiest and simple post. Groundnut oil rice is eaten in Nigeria by almost all, and it is easy to prepare.

i. Rice
ii. Groundnut oil
iii. Smoked fish
iv. Seasoning cube
v. Salt
vi. Pepper
vii. Onion
viii. Crayfish
ix. Scent leaf

1. WASH YOUR rice with salt so as to reduce some starchy content.
2. Add it in a pan, add water, set a heat and place the pan on heat for 5minutes, after that you re-wash the rice again.
3. Add the grinded, crayfish, pepper, salt to taste, seasoning cube also to taste, onion, add the smoked fish and a little quantity of water, stir properly and place the pan on heat, allow for 5minutes.
4. Add the oil and stir, cover for it to simmer for 3minutes or more before adding the scent leaf as the last thing, and allow for extra 1-2minutes.
Ensure that the rice is soft enough and that all recipes are to taste. Then you can now bring it down and serve hot.

iv. Water to extract milk from the coconut

vii. Ice cubes

1. Pour one tin of milk inside a clean bowl, (depending on the quantity of the drink).
2. Add a pinch of nut milk into the bowl.
3. Break open the coconut, wash it and get your electronic blended (hard one) to blend the coconut. (you can as well use the Manuel process which is grating.
4. After that use warm or cold water to wash the blended coconut, separate the shaft from the milk and set aside.
5. Wash Blend or grate the banana.
6. Pour the well blended banana into the bowl mix properly everything, with your wooden spoon.
7. Sieve the mixture and set aside.
8. Add ice cubes to the drink so as to make it chill, then serve it.
